RECIPE OF THE MONTH: PORTER

By Hoptron Brewtique on 2/24/2015

"And what this flood of deeper brown,
Which a white foam does also crown,
Less White than snow, more white than mortar?
Oh, my soul!  Can this be Porter?

-The Déjeuné

Only one style of beer could elicit such praise and that style, of course, is the marvelous Porter.  My personal favorite style of beer to brew (mostly because it's my favorite style to drink), the Porter is a beer whose history is as rich and complex as it's flavor.

COOKING WITH BEER BECAUSE COOKING IS MORE FUN BUZZED (Just Kidding)

By Hoptron Brewtique on 2/17/2015

This recipe, taken from Jacquelyn Dodd’s “The Craft Beer Cookbook” (Adams Media, 2013) uses our style of the month, porter, to make a fantastic black bean soup.  And, since there’s no meat in this recipe, even I can eat it (bonus points for those who make this AND bring it for me to eat).

DARK IS NOT A FLAVOR

By Hoptron Brewtique on 2/8/2015

When it comes to porters, stouts, brown ales, schwarzbier, etc (i.e. “dark beers”) there are a lot of misconceptions that those new to craft beer have.  The number one reason for this?  Let’s just say that there’s this well known Irish brewery that makes this particular beer that everyone knows and usually drinks at St. Patrick’s Day, and because that’s often the first (and only) dark beer most people have tried, all dark beers must then be like it.  I mean, there are all sorts of macro beers out there, and all of them are yellow but only ONE beer that is dark.  Well, for most of human history, all beers were, in fact, dark.  Only in recent times have beers become lighter in color.  But craft brewers make all sorts of styles, and many of these finished products are dark.  Are they all like the Irish example above?  Some are, sure, but I would say 80% or more are nothing like it.

PORTER

By Hoptron Brewtique on 2/3/2015

You know one of the best things about beer?  I mean, other than the drinking it (and the happy after effects)?  The best thing for me is that the history of beer is really the history of civilization.  We saw this with the backstory of IPAs and we also see it with our next Beer Style of the Month, good ol’ Porter!
Now, as sexy a style that IPAs are, porters are a bit the opposite.  If IPAs are like the cool kid, porters are a bit like your grandpa.  You feel like they’ve always been there and always will be, but that they’re just a little less spunky.  And while that might seem true, that they are dependable  but old school, porters were born in a time of monster economic and social upheaval – the English Industrial Revolution – and for a significant amount of time, porters were the be all and end all.  THE original cool kid......

RECIPE OF THE MONTH - NEW ZEALAND IPA

By Hoptron Brewtique on 1/27/2015
Every month, our good friend Patrick McHale, beertender at Hoptron and owner of Back Alley Brew Shop located just behind us, will give us home-brew recipe for the style of the month.  This month, IPAs and as we focused previously on hop styles from the other side of the world, Patrick goes into a bit more depth regarding New Zealand hops in particular - and, of course, you can purchase these hops and many more from Back Alley. Take it away, Patrick!.....

HOP BLOG

By Hoptron Brewtique on 1/15/2015

American craft brewers can be viewed as the Indiana Joneses of their profession. They take ancient, esoteric and almost extinct beer styles, dust them off and present them to a new and appreciative base, almost always with a twist and a wink. Gose, porter, saisons, all given fresh life here in America. Nothing epitomizes this more than the India Pale Ale, which has also become pretty much THE quintessential craft brew. And what is the key to this style, in all of its forms? Hops, man! Lots and lots of hops. But ....

IPA - India Pale Ale

My craft beer hardcore infatuation began with Blue Point Brewery’s Hoptical Illusion and it was amazing; I had never tasted anything before then that was so bitter and yet so juicy, so sharp and yet so drinkable. It sure didn’t hurt that it was higher on the ABV level, either. At the time, it meant my hard earned dollar went a good amount further. IPAs became my jam and I’ve never been the same since. But, just like many relationships, attention begins to wane. And, honestly, my attention has been wavering off IPAs...

New Hoptron Blog

By Hoptron Brewtique on 1/1/2015

Hey y’all! We’ve been asked to start keeping an up-to-date blog on our website (ok, maybe it was my mom who asked, but it counts). But we wanted it to have a point, a purpose, a theme! So, here’s what we are going to do:

Every month, we are picking a Beer Style of the Month. Each week, we will talk about the style, pick a brewery that’s making sick examples of that style, discuss new and cool events or features about the style and (courtesy of our very own Patrick McHale of Back Alley Brew Shop) give a homebrew recipe for that style. Maybe we will grab some of our friends at Hoptron to talk about why they love Imperial Stouts, or have one of our Beertenders select a Saison and talk about why they dig it. Nice and themey- no?
